The Asheville Tourists at McCormick Field
My Favorite Yankee is a sports fan. He has finally accepted that I would rather stay home and read a book but once in a while, he requests my presence. This time he wanted me to join him and one of our favorite couples at a Sunday afternoon Asheville Tourist ballgame.
Let me be honest. I hate baseball. It’s nothing against the Asheville Tourists. They are a popular minor league baseball team, Class Atlantic League and have been a farm team of the Colorado Rockies since 1994. (Whatever that means.) They were actually founded in 1897. (How very Southern.) I hate baseball because, unless someone hits a home run with all the bases loaded, the game is so slow. And I get restless. People around me take offense if I try to read a book on my iPhone. So let’s just say this was a big sacrifice.
The Yankee enticed me with lunch in advance at Outback Steakhouse. I took full advantage with a Bloomin’ Onion and a filet. I had also ordered in advance a new Lilly Pulitzer sleeveless 100% pima cotton dress and a new sun hat since I would be sitting in the sweltering July heat.
In my hot weather attire
And speaking of the heat. I do not enjoy sweating. No Southern woman does. We prefer to simply glow. If you are a climate change denier, please come down and join me for a game. I will show you the increase in heat index statistics over the last five years and you will leave a believer shouting, “Amen, Al Gore.” It was so hot we left after it took three and a half hours to play six innings. The Tourists were defeated by the Augusta Greenjackets 10-9.
At least I was one of the first 1000 people who were given a free t-shirt. I may actually wear it. But the Yankee owes me one.
