One of the very best Nutcracker performances in the South is a total student production. At the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, high school and college students at the institution do it all- the dancing, the music, the set design and technical work, and the costumes. Children in the school’s Preparatory Dance Program also participate. The performances benefit scholarships at the school.
Lynn Felder, of the Winston-Salem Journal reviewed this year’s production and called it, “…an immersion in innocence and fantasy for the audience. For a couple of hours, time stands still. Beauty and imagination, Spanish, Russian, Arabian, giant and tiny dancers all hold sway. And the world has a chance to change.”
Ten thousand people attend the production and net revenue is over 600,000 dollars. In our family, we attend every year. This is how we begin the season. It is a part of our celebration and tradition. I now know all the music by heart and Tchaikovsky never disappoints. This year’s production was outstanding. Winston-Salem is a good place to visit for the holiday not only to see the Nutcracker but to enjoy the Christmas beauty of Old Salem.
The Nutcracker keeps me young as the visions of sugar plums dance in my head. Merry Christmas, all.
